The Kindergarten system illustrates what I mean; notwithstanding its German name, the Kindergarten is not a common product in the Fatherland; it is in America that the ideas of Froebel have received their greatest development, that the Kindergarten has become a cult, and the great teacher a prophet. But the impulse has worn itself out; any way, it is waxing weak. Mr Thistleton Mark on the Kindergarten.--According to Mr Thistleton Mark--whose able paper on 'Moral Education in American Schools' offers matter for much profitable reflection--" Even a stationary Froebelian is driven to have some better holdfast than the ipse dixit of the great reformer. The word Kindergarten is no longer a proper noun signifying always and everywhere the one, sole, original, and identical thing. It is a common noun, and as such is assured of a more permanent place in American speech." That is to say, educational thought in America is tending towards the broad and natural conception expressed in the phrase 'education is a life.' But I wish that educationalists would give up the name Kindergarten. I cannot help thinking that it is somewhat of a strain to conscientious minds to draw the cover of Froebelian doctrine and practice over the broader and more living conceptions that are abroad to-day. Even revolutionised Kindergarten practice must suffer from the memory and habit of weaknesses such as are pointed out by Dr Stanley Hall in the following words--Dr Stanley Hall on the Kindergarten.--"The most decadent intellectual new departure of the American Froebelists is the emphasis now laid upon the mother-plays...

As a homeschool graduate, and author of Homeschooling: The Bigger Picture (your conversation with a homeschool graduate) I know a thing or two about homeschooling. I also know that while things have changed a lot from the times of Charlotte Mason, the way that children learn naturally and are provided with the best "education" is not something that changes over time. This book is an excellent resource and I would highly recommend it.Personally I loved the chapter on foreign language as I studied Latin in high school. The works of Charlotte Mason are truly remarkable and a much needed education in itself.

Fantastic ideas. Especially for the elementary years. I appreciate the amount of care Mrs. Mason put into her articles.
Despite being slightly outdated, the woman was much wiser than most people I know nowadays.
Whether this is a rip off from some site - I don't know, but hopefully not, as this is a nice addition to our homeschooling library.
This book is a fairly good read. I found it to be a bit out dated. While there are certainly some good tips and advice I found a lot of it isn't very applicable, at least for me. I would recommend it to a friend but there are a lot of other homeschool books that I've found to be more helpful.
Charlotte Mason's Home Education is an EXCELLENT book and anyone considering homeschooling should look into her methods.
But.... There have been many CM series that have been copied straight out of amblesideonline.com, and while I am not 100% sure this is one of those stolen copies, there are many typos and errors that leave me suspicious. I have also seen other books in the series by this publisher with comments saying it was stolen. So be warned At the very best you will be purchasing a badly edited book.
As for me, I will be buying the remainder of the series from a different publisher.
This was a very informative book on homeschooling and traditional ideals were presented.
I found it helpful and was interesting reading.
I think that if you are considering home school this book is well worth the read. Or if your an educator this book had a lot of very good ideas.
so gifted, what an instructor! she has such a heart for children and incredible insight into what they need. education should be exciting, and she helps you "lay the feast" so children love learning. i'm so happy to be able to get a hold of these books. i can't understand why educators today aren't using her methods. she really helped me to understand where my kids are developmentally so i'm no longer frustrated with them not "behaving" and not paying attention.
Although the older language & style takes some getting used to, the concepts in this book are both timeless & priceless. Would highly recommend to any parent - home schooling or not.
